Sermon Series: “Myths That Make Us Miserable”

Introduction: Many people are miserable because they are carrying around loads of anger, unforgiveness, bitterness, and resentment. These types of issues are some of the most common issues that people come to pastors and counselors with. Everyone listening to this message is dealing with or has dealt with these kinds of thoughts and feelings. There are many myths surrounding this subject, especially that we can be justified in our anger, unforgiveness, and lack of reconciling relationships. However, because of the seriousness, prevalence, and repercussions of not forgiving and dealing with anger, I would say that it is extremely important for us to replace myths with the truth so let’s see what Jesus has to say about this subject. In the Sermon on the Mount (and elsewhere in Scripture), Jesus tells us to:

1. Let go of our anger (5:21-22).

2. Reconcile broken relationships (5:23-26, see also Matthew 18:15).

3. Forgive those who wrong us (Matthew 6:12, 14-15, see also Matthew 18:15-21-35 and Ephesians 4:32).

4. Make it a priority to obey immediately (5:23-26).
