He is Able Part 2: “He Is Able To Keep Us Saved”

“He Is Able To Keep Us Saved”

2 Timothy 1:8-12

Sermon Series: “He Is Able”

Introduction: What would our convictions be if we were facing death in the midst of suffering in a dungeon? What are our convictions when life is difficult or people challenge our faith today? What are our convictions when life is going smoothly?

Main Idea: Jesus is permanently holding on to us so we can live unashamedly with hope even in the midst of suffering for the gospel.

1. Jesus is the object of our faith (“I know whom I have believed”).

2. Jesus is able to keep us saved (“am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day”). Samuel Rutherford wrote, “Often and often, I have in my folly torn up my copy of God’s covenant with me; but blessed be His Name, He keeps it in heaven safe; and He stands by it always.” How do we know that He is able to keep us saved?

A. He is the one who saved and called us with a holy calling.

  1. We are not saved by our own works.
  2. We are saved according to His purpose and grace

    through Jesus Christ.

  3. God initiated this in eternity past.
  4. Jesus accomplished salvation in time and space.
  5. Jesus triumphed over death and brought life.

3. Our response to His ability to keep us is hope, which is expressed by living with (“nevertheless I am not ashamed”):

A. Conviction
B. Courage
C. Passion for the gospel D. Willingness to suffer
