“God Is Holy”
Isaiah 6:1-8 Sermon Series: “God Is”
Introduction: As we continue to seek to learn who God truly is, we come today to an attribute of God that is very difficult for us to understand and accept. We have a tendency to try to remake God in our own image, especially when it comes to His holiness. We like the fact that God is love, but His holiness can be rather disturbing. The great prophet, Isaiah, was graced with a vision of Jesus Christ (John 12:41), who is the visible revelation of God. Who is God? What does it mean that He is holy?
1. God is holy (v. 1-4). What does it mean that God is holy?
A. God is completely unique. He is separate from us and
above us. God is on His throne, high and lifted up, and He is completely glorious.
B. God is completely pure. He is absolutely good and totally perfect. Because God is holy, He is righteous, just, and wrathful in His dealings with human beings.
2. We are sinful (v. 5). As we clearly see who God is, we will then see how completely sinful that we are. Isaiah had been pronouncing woes upon others, but now he saw his own spiritual condition. We cannot really know God without seeing who He is and seeing who we are in light of Him.
3. A holy God cleanses sinful people through the gracious atonement of Jesus Christ (v. 6-7) [see also Romans 3:19-26 and Isaiah 12].
Conclusion-Response: What do we do with this reality? -Faith
-Humility
-Repentance
-Worship -Surrender
