“God Is Creator”
Genesis 1:1 Sermon Series: “God Is”
1. God is Creator: The Bible begins by saying, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). In fact, the Bible claims this from cover to cover. It is foundational to everything else in Scripture. However, this idea is laughed at by many people in our country. Of course, that does not mean it is not true. The reality is that God is life and the life-giver. Nothing exists apart from Him. When we talk about creation, we mean that God made everything from nothing. The creation model says that the Creator suddenly created life with intelligent design within the parameters of fixed “kinds.” The evolutionary model asserts that life emerged from non-life through naturalistic processes over a large amount of time through the mechanism of natural selection. Which model is true? Everything rides on it? Let’s examine the two models and the implications.
2. Evidence for Creation and Against Evolution:
A. Appearance of Intelligent Design
B. Law of biogenesis-Spontaneous generation is
impossible. It means that something cannot come from nothing. C. Evolution violates the law of cause and effect (There
is a cause for every effect, an actor for every action, and a thinker for every thought.) Lee Strobel asserts that in order to accept Darwinism, we have to believe:
- Nothing produce everything
- Non-life produces life
- Randomness produces fine-tuning
- Chaos produces information
- Unconsciousness produces consciousness
- Non-reason produces reason
D. There is no evidence of transmutation and macroevolution.
E. There is no evidence in the fossil record of transitional forms or links.
F. Selective breeding (mutations are usually harmful)
G. Irreducible Complexity (gradual evolution is really impossible)
H. The Anthropic Principle “which states that the physical structure of the universe is exactly what it must be in order to support life” (Charles Colson).
I. The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, which states that the universe is in the process of gradual decay and disintegration, is the exact opposite of the idea that we are evolving.
3. Implications Regarding the Truth of Creation and Evolution: In other words, what is at stake in this debate?
A. Is there a God?
B. Is the Bible true?
C. Is there life after death?
D. Is there an absolute foundation for right and wrong? E. Is there any ultimate accountability?
F. Is there ultimate meaning or purpose for life?
G. Do we really have free will?
H. Who has power over life and death?
I. What is the basis for creativity?
J. What is the point of work?
K. Do humans really have dignity and worth?
L. How do we define marriage and sexuality?
M. Is Jesus Christ truly the Savior (Colossians 1:15-22)?
