God Is Part 2: God is Infinite

“God Is Infinite”

Sermon Series: “God Is”

Introduction: How big is your God? A.W. Tozer has written, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us…Were we able to extract from any man a complete answer to the question, ‘What comes into your mind when you think about God?’ we might predict with certainty the spiritual future of that man.” So, do we live like God is small and limited or big and unlimited? Today, we are going to look at the reality that God is infinite, which “means not only that God is unlimited, but that he is unlimitable” (Millard Erickson). Here are a few different angles from which we can see that God is infinite.

1. He is infinite in regard to time-eternal (Psalm 90:2, Exodus 3:14, John 8:58, Colossians 1:16-17, Hebrews 9:14).

2. He is infinite in regard to space-omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-12, Jeremiah 23:23-24).

3. He is infinite in regard to knowledge-omniscient (Psalm 139:1-5, Psalm 147:5, Proverbs 15:3, Hebrews 4:13, 1 John 3:20, Colossians 2:1-3). God knows everything, but He is also completely wise, which means that He is able to direct us in the way we should live our lives.

4. He is infinite in regard to power-omnipotent (Psalm 115:1-3, Revelation 19:6, Jeremiah 32:27, Matthew 19:23-26).

5. He is infinite in regard to His authority-transcendent (Acts 17:24, Isaiah 55:8-9). This fact means that He is separate from and superior to His creation. He is higher than us and over us. Yet, He is also near us, which is called immanence (Acts 17:25-28). It is mind-boggling to consider that this infinite, transcendent God became one of us in the person of Jesus Christ, who became a finite man while still being God. It is possibly more mind-boggling to consider that this infinite God dwells in us through His Holy Spirit. This means that God is both great and good. In other words, He has the power to do good to us and the desire to do what is best for us.

Conclusion-Applications:

1. Trust Jesus as our Lord and Savior so we can know this good and great God.

2. Live by faith because of who God is (Romans 4:16-25). 3. Pray with confidence (Matthew 6:8). Miracles should be

expected from an infinite God.

4. Stop running because it is impossible to run away from somebody who is everywhere (example of Jonah).

5. Live according to God’s wisdom and will (Proverbs 19:21).

6. This reality clearly why only the one true God is worthy of worship and why idolatry is so offensive to Him.

7. Seeing who God really is brings us to a place of humility (Isaiah 57:15).
