“The Cure for an Empty Heart”
John 4:1-26
Sermon Series: “Getting Acquainted With Jesus”
Introduction: I believe that we live in an age that is marked by people who seemingly have it all and have it all together on the outside but are empty on the inside. The famous Samaritan woman at the well that Jesus had a conversation with is a great example in Scripture of a person that was empty on the inside. However, the good news is that Jesus gave her the cure for an empty heart. Just like Jesus sought her out, He is seeking you to give you the cure.
1. The Symptoms of an Empty Heart: Her symptoms included isolation and loneliness, emptiness, being unloved and insecure, trying to find happiness in relationships with men, and focusing on the external instead of the internal. Like so many people today, she wanted her life to be made easier more than she wanted a real cure.
2. The Disease of an Empty Heart: We need to stop focusing on the symptoms and start focusing on the real issue. Sin causes pain. However, just like with a disease, the real problem is not the pain but the root sickness. This lady was focused on external things, but the real problem was her sinful lifestyle. The heart of the problem is always a problem of the heart. Jesus lovingly confronted her sin. He does the same thing with us. We are all sinners. That is our real problem (Exodus 20, Romans 3). Until we get to the place where we repent of sin instead of trying to find relief for our symptoms, we will always have an empty heart.
3. The Cure for an Empty Heart: The cure is the living water of salvation that is received through Jesus Christ. How do we receive this cure?
Recognize our desperate need for spiritual life (the fact that we are spiritually empty and thirsty).
Recognize the fact that God is seeking us.
Confess and genuinely repent of sin (Acts 3:19).
Trust Jesus as God, Messiah, and Sin-bearer.
