Sermon Series: “Christmas In A Chaotic World”
Introduction: Peace is elusive in this chaotic world because the lack of peace is ultimately an internal instead of an external problem. James 4:1 says, “Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?” We talk about peace a lot at Christmas, but let’s be honest, it is a time that is often more stressful than peaceful. At Christmas, we often wrestle with grief, busyness, debt, dealing with broken families and/or families we don’t like, depression, problems in the world, and many other things. So, it is crucial that we realize that Christmas doesn’t necessarily bring peace but Christ does.
Our text calls Jesus the Prince of Peace. Jesus said of Himself, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Peace is the Hebrew word, “shalom.” It means wholeness and well-being. It is the opposite of fear, anxiety, and worry. It is having an internal calm despite circumstances. So, how does Jesus give us this peace?
Main Idea: Jesus is our Prince of Peace who gives us peace in the midst of the stress of this chaotic world.
1. Jesus gives us peace with God (Romans 5:1-2). Jesus came to make us right with God. When we trust Jesus, we move from being enemies of God to being children of God.
2. Jesus gives us the peace of God (Isaiah 26:3-4, Philippians 4:6-7, Galatians 5:22). Real peace is supernatural. We don’t find peace by seeking peace but by seeking the Lord and peace is the byproduct.
