“Breaking The Chains Of Sin”
Romans 6
Sermon Series: “Chains”
Introduction: Can we do whatever we want to do because we believe in Jesus and are forgiven and going to heaven? This seems to be the question Paul was presented with because of his teaching about grace, and he responded by saying, “Absolutely not.” Why?
Main Idea: Jesus died for sin to set us free FROM sin-not to sin.
How do we put sin to death and live in the freedom Jesus died for?
1. Know that we died and were raised to new life with Jesus. (v.1-10). The key word in this section is “know.” If we are going to put sin to death and live in freedom, we have to know what Jesus has done for us and who we are in Him.
2. Count the fact that we died and were raised to new life with Jesus as true of us (v. 11). “Reckon” is the key word in this section, and it is an accounting term that means “to place it to your account.” In other words, we have to accept and believe that this is personally true of us.
3. Surrender our lives to Jesus on an ongoing basis (v. 12-23).
The key word in this section is “present,” and it refers to us offering ourselves to God. We are basically told to present ourselves to the Lord as His slaves. Why would we take a step like this?
- We are alive through the grace of God (v. 12-15).
- We will either be a slave of sin and die or a slave ofJesus and live (v. 16-17).
- We have been set free by Jesus, but we have tosurrender in order to practically experience that
freedom (v. 18-19).
- If we do not surrender to Jesus and kill our sin, it willkill us and those we love (v. 20-23).
