“Breaking The Chains of Condemnation”
Romans 8:1-4
Sermon Series: “Chains”
Introduction: Jesus broke the chains of condemnation on the cross so we can stop carrying them around. How do we lay the chains of condemnation down and live in freedom?
1. Why do people feel condemned?
A. For some people, it is because they are condemned (v.
1, John 3:17-18, 36, Romans 1:18).
B. For some people, it is because they are holding on to
the Law instead of resting in the Gospel (v. 2-4).
C. For some people, it is because they are not walking in
the Spirit, but are instead going back to their old ways (v. 1, 4). D. For some people, it is because they are listening to the
wrong voices instead of the Word of God.
2. Why can we trust that we are not condemned if we are in Christ?
A. God’s promise (v. 1).
B. The work of Jesus for us (v. 2-4). Notice what He accomplished in coming to earth, dying for us, and rising again. He condemned sin, and He fulfilled the demands of the Law. This means that He has both removed all of our sins, and positively, He has credited His perfect obedience to us.
C. The work of the Holy Spirit in us (v. 2, 4). The Holy Spirit has set us free from the law of sin and death, and He enables us to actually live a holy life in obedience to the Lord.
Main Idea-Takeaway: When I focus on what I have done, there is condemnation. When I focus on what Jesus has done for me, there is freedom!
Conclusion: Some of you need to trust Jesus and receive His forgiveness so you are no longer condemned. Some need to rest in His finished work and focus on what He has done for you.
