“What Christmas Is All About”
Hebrews 2
Sermon Series: “Behind The Scenes Of The Christmas Story”
Introduction: In the famous words of Charlie Brown, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?” It is easy to feel that way about Christmas. However, God’s Word is very clear in regard to the real meaning of Christmas. Let’s look at one of the passages that clearly shows what Christmas is all about.
1. The ultimate purpose of Christmas is that our creator God, Jesus Christ, came into His creation as a man in order to die for sinful human beings and bring us salvation (v. 5-10) [see also Matthew 1:20-23; John 1:1, 14; Colossians 2:9, 13-15]
2. There are some awesome benefits for us because Jesus came and died (v. 10-18). They include:
A. Jesus brings us to glory (v. 10). This means that some day we will receive glorified bodies and be made perfect (Romans 8:28-30). Jesus suffered so we can escape suffering in heaven. We will also experience the glory of God in heaven (John 17:22-24).
B. Jesus brings us into the family of God (v. 10-13, see also Galatians 4:4-7).
C. Jesus destroyed Satan so we can be delivered from the bondage of the fear of death (v. 14-15).
D. Jesus is our sympathetic High Priest who is available to aid us in our trials and temptations (v. 16-18).
3. It is urgently necessary for us to respond to this message (v. 1-4). Verse 1 says, “Therefore, we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.” The first part of verse 3 asks this question, “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” This is a warning of judgment. Don’t just hear this wonderful message, but please act on it by faith.
